Bookish Resources: How To Find Great Books

When I decided to leave my full-time librarian job and become a stay-at-home mom, I worried I wouldn’t know about new books anymore.

My gigantic, never-ending, always growing TBR list laughs at my past self’s worries. (I’m looking at you, 3316 Want To Read List on Goodreads.)

From bookstagram to podcasts to magazines to newsletters, the amount of information about books and what to read can be almost overwhelming – it’s an embarrassment of riches!

I tend to be the kind of person who thinks she can read all the newsletters, listen to all the podcasts, and follow all the bookish Instagram accounts, and so on. It’s the librarian in me. The more information, the better!  I have learned, though, that if I actually tried to do that, I would not have any time to actually read.

So my suggestion to you, dear reader, is to find what works best for you. I have my tried and true podcasts that I listen to faithfully. I have my favorite newsletters. I never forget to grab the latest edition of BookPage at my library. You get the idea.

And I also encourage you every once and while to step outside your favorites and see what’s new. You might discover some great gems.

Here are a few of my favorite bookish resources:

Podcasts–Tried & True. I never miss an episode from this list:

The Book Gang Podcast with Amy Allen Clark @momadvice

Reading Through Life@readingthroughlifepod

Book Talk, etc@booktalketc

New To Me Podcasts: Some trusted bookish friends suggested the following and I am loving them. I am catching new ones and listening to back episodes. (Side Note: Listening to back episodes is also a great way to find backlist titles that you might have missed and bonus, they usually don’t have hold lists at the library).

Print Publications

BookPage – I snag a print copy of this publication every month from my local library. I love the reviews and interviews. It’s a treat to get my marker out and page through. See if your library offers this. If not, subscribe to the newsletter for wonderful suggestions.

These are just a few of my favorites. What resources do you use to find great books?

Wishing you many happy reading experiences!

About Me

Welcome! I started my career as a children’s librarian, later becoming a public library director and now I’m a stay at home mom. While my career might have changed, my love of reading has been a constant since I was in 4th grade, and I read over 200 books a year. I love talking about books and connecting readers of all ages with just the right book. Thanks for reading!
