Thank you so much to Kensington Books @kensingtonbooks and Between the Chapters Book Club @btc_books for the ARC of The Enemy at Home by Kevin O’Brien, set to publish Tuesday August 22nd. What a gripping historical mystery–I could not put this down and finished it in a day and a half!
Set in Seattle, 1943, O’Brien tells the story of wife and mother Nora Kinney who decides to take a wartime job at the local Boeing plant while her husband is overseas. It’s hard work and in addition to learning a new job, Nora still has to keep up with household tasks and taking care of her two children, Jane and Chris. And it’s Chris Nora is especially worried about – he’s sneaking out at night, not telling Nora where he’s been or what he’s up to. If all this wasn’t enough, there is a serial killer targeting women in Rosie the Riveter jobs and as the murders continue, they hit closer and closer to home.
I could not turn the pages of this book fast enough, but had to put it away before bed because it is creepy! Books set on the homefront during WWII are fascinating as so much of what I’ve read about WWII is set abroad. The details are rich and the suspense had my heart rate up the whole time. I was fooled by the red herrings, and I’m pretty sure my jaw was on the ground when I reached the conclusion. An excellent read.
