The Sunday Salon: June 2nd 2024

Happy Sunday! Deb Nance at Readerbuzz hosts The Sunday Salon, and I’m joining in!

Favorite Read of the Week:

I post reviews on Instagram and Goodreads. What have you read this week?

James by Percival Everett. Wow. Just wow. This retelling/reimagining of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was brilliant. I finished listening to this several days ago and haven’t stopped thinking about it. It’s the kind of book that will stay with me for a long time. It takes everything I’ve thought about the story of Huckleberry Finn and turns it around, allowing me to see it in a new way. This would make an excellent book club discussion. Five Stars.

What I’m Reading & Listening to Now:

Reading: Lighthouse Library Mystery #11 The Stranger in the Library by Eva Gates

Listening: When Grumpy Met Sunshine by Charlotte Stein

Something Good:

Our first week of summer break was a wonderful mix of activities and down time (which translates to so much reading time). My favorite part of the week was going to the pool for the first time with the kids.

Something I’m Looking Forward To:

It’s a busy upcoming week. We have another belt test for taekwondo and this is the hardest form we have learned yet. I am looking forward to having the test out of the way, ha! My daughter starts a camp this week so my son and I are looking for activities to blend into our week–both of us like lots of reading time!

  1. I finished James this week, too, and I also loved it. It definitely is a completely new look at the characters of Huck Finn.

I also went to the pool for the first time since last summer, and it was delightful.

  2. I think all the reviews of “James” have been good. I really love Mark Twain’s original which means I hesitate to read an interpretation of it. It’s a very tough book because it DOES transcend the ugliness of its time somewhat it can’t completely get past the lived reality that Twain had seen.

I keep hearing wonderful things about James. I don’t find myself drawn to it yet, but someday. I want to be in the right head space for that one. Both of your current reads sound good too! A cozy mystery and a romance sound like my kind of summer reads. 🙂 I hope you have great week and summer!

About Me

Welcome! I started my career as a children’s librarian, later becoming a public library director and now I’m a stay at home mom. While my career might have changed, my love of reading has been a constant since I was in 4th grade, and I read over 200 books a year. I love talking about books and connecting readers of all ages with just the right book. Thanks for reading!
