Weekly Reads Round Up: Favorite Read of the Week

Will’s Race for Home by Jewell Parker Rhodes – “It’s 1889, barely twenty-five years after the Emancipation Proclamation, and a young Black family is tired of working on land they don’t get to own. So when Will and his father hear about an upcoming land rush, they set out on a journey from Texas to Oklahoma, racing thousands of others to the place where land is free—if they can get to it fast enough.” 

This was such a fascinating and fast-paced work of historical fiction for middle grade. I was reading it in the waiting room of a doctor’s office and they had to call my name twice because I was so absorbed! I was so glad to have this adventure story and the story of a Black family during the Oklahoma Land Rush, and I think kids will absolutely be drawn to our main character Will.

Reading: Mrs. Tim Flies Home (Mrs. Tim #5) by D.E. Stevenson

Listening: The Thief (The Queen’s Thief #1) by Megan Whalen Turner

BIG Book Slow But Steady: The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles (page 160 of 576)

Week in Review: 

Whew! What a week! I had three appointments and my son had an emergency dental appointment (all solved now!). I was able to see friends to swim and another friend for an early morning breakfast. My daughter and I saw her friends in a production of The Little Mermaid that was so well done. 

Tonight we’re having a Christmas in July dinner with ham and a dessert I don’t have to bake (I had planned on making our favorite mint brownies that we only make at Christmas, but it is just too hot to turn on the oven. I’ll be heading to the grocery to pick up something fun and cold). I’ll be listening to Christmas music and reading a Christmas cozy mystery. Maybe that will help me cool off? 

Something I’m Looking Forward To:

I’m looking forward to seeing my daughter in a production of The Lightning Thief this coming weekend. I have a dentist check up this week so five more appointments this summer and we will have completed the list. The summer sometimes requires a lot of scheduling!
