The Sunday Salon: Sunday December 31st, 2023

Happy Sunday! Deb Nance at Readerbuzz hosts The Sunday Salon, and I’m joining in!

Weekly Reads Round Up: Sunday December 24th 2023 – Saturday December 30th 2023

I post reviews on Instagram and Goodreads. What have you read this week?

The Secret of the Lady’s Maid, book seven in the Rosalind Thorne Mysteries by Darcie Wilde (I read a galley copy from the publisher. Review linked below.)

Coconut Drop Dead, Spice Isle Bakery Mysteries #3, by Olivia Matthews (I listened to a copy using my library’s Hoopla app. Review linked below.)

Congratulations, the Best is Over! by R. Eric Thomas (I listened to a copy using my library’s Libby app. I loved every minute of this real and funny memoir.)

The Frozen River  by Ariel Lawhon (Five star historical fiction. One of my favorite books of the year.)

The Misfits #1: A Royal Conundrum by Lisa Yee, Dan Santat (Illustrator) (I read an eARC from the publisher. Review linked below.)

The Mystery Guest (Molly the Maid #2) by Nita Prose (I listened to a copy using my library’s Libby app. I love Molly.)

What I’m Reading & Listening to Now:

Reading: Dead and Gondola: A Christie Bookshop Mystery by Ann Claire

Listening: The Blonde Identity by Ally Carter

Life:

Happy New Year’s Eve! Do you celebrate until midnight? I’m an early to bed, early to rise person so I won’t be celebrating at midnight (much to the dismay of my kids). We do have a fun spaghetti and fancy meatballs dinner planned with mint brownies I usually make before Christmas but didn’t get to this year.

It’s been a lovely week of winter break, but I’m ready to get back into a routine-I do love structure. We watched the new Trolls movie which was so much fun and went to the History Museum.

3 Good Things:

  1. I saw a friend from high school that I don’t get to see very often and it was just so much fun. Two hours went by in a blink.
  2. We got a new board game–Really Loud Librarians and it is so much fun and does get really loud. A board game that entertains the whole family is a wonderful thing.
  3. I discovered the Rosalind Thorne Mysteries by Darcie Wilde (see review below) and I am so excited to go back and read/listen to books 1-6. Historical mysteries have become my favorite type of reading this year.

  1. Really Loud Librarians sounds like a blast. I’ll have to check it out. I’m glad you got to see your friend from high school. I have a couple of those that I haven’t seen in a many years. Maybe I’ll get to see them too. 🙂 Happy New Year!

  2. I’m reading, on Kindle, TRE GIORNI DI POMPEII by Alberto Angela — the Italian edition, because there is no English edition, or even a French edition (which I could manage.) So, I’m relying on Bing translate in Kindle. Not ideal, but still fascinating.

  6. A library near me has an amazing number of board games to check out. I’ll look for the Really Loud Librarians game there.

Instead of staying up till midnight here, I watched midnight arrive in Paris!

  7. Happy new year! I do stay up until midnight, as I’m a bit of a nightowl, but last night I overdid it and we had to sleep in waaaay too late. Oops. Still, I got some reading done… 😁

I really want to read The Frozen River and am glad you liked it. I haven’t read The Mystery Guest yet but do plan to. I love Molly too.

Your New Year’s Eve sounds nice! My family and I got together with some friends for a low-key New Year’s celebration. There was a baked potato bar and chocolate cake. I think us grown-ups wouldn’t have minded calling it early, but we didn’t want to spoil the kids’ fun.

Really Loud Librarians sounds like fun! I’ll have to check that game out.

I hope you have a Happy New Year, Sarah!

  11. Really Loud Librarians sounds fun. My husband loves board games, and he used to be a librarian, so I’m going to keep it in mind. Happy New Year!

About Me

Welcome! I started my career as a children’s librarian, later becoming a public library director and now I’m a stay at home mom. While my career might have changed, my love of reading has been a constant since I was in 4th grade, and I read over 200 books a year. I love talking about books and connecting readers of all ages with just the right book. Thanks for reading!
