Death on the Night Riviera: A Cozy British Historical Mystery by Patricia Penrose was exactly the kind of historical mystery I love to read. I could not put this engaging mystery down, and I can only hope that this might be the first in a series? I would fully support that!
World War rages and Alberta Holdaway’s father (Vicar Holdaway) is granted a sabbatical. Despite her Red Cross volunteer duties in London, Alberta decides to travel with her father to their family home in Cornwall and help him get settled. The two travel from Paddington Station to Penzane in a sleeper train called the Night Riviera. Not long after their arrival, a mysterious woman from their train ride is found murdered, and Alberta’s father is the prime suspect.
Determined to prove her father’s innocence, Alberta dives into the investigation with determination and bravery, plus a little bit of humor. She’s accompanied by the local constable Sabin, his young daughter, Piper and an adorable, slightly portly, English bulldog.
This was so much fun to read. Just the right mix of twists and turns that kept me turning the pages and trying to guess the ending, but only coming slightly close. I adored the humor that showed through charming characters. And the cozy scenes blended perfectly with nail biting ones. I was sorry this ended and do hope there are more!
