☕The Sunday Salon: Sunday December 22, 2024☕

Happy Sunday! Thanks to Deb Nance at Readerbuzz for hosting The Sunday Salon.

Favorite Read of the Week

I post reviews on Instagram and Goodreads. What have you read this week?

Christmas with the Queen by Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb

My Review:

This was an absolutely charming work of historical fiction that I couldn’t stop listening to. The book begins in England 1952 and wraps up in 1957. We have three characters and the story alternates between their points of view: Olive Carter, single mother, typist at the BBC, and aspiring reporter, Jack, a grief-stricken widowed chef originally from New Orleans, who accepts a last-minute chance to cook in the royal kitchens at Sandringham and young Queen Elizabeth II who finds her feet as the new monarch.

The vivid details of the setting and the second chance romance made my heart happy, and it was just the Christmas read I needed. Highly recommend.

What I’m Reading & Listening to Now:

Reading: By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult

Listening: We Solve Murders (We Solve Murders #1) by Richard Osman

Week in Review:

Yay! We have made it to winter break. We’ve been working hard this weekend on chores like grocery shopping, laundry and cleaning so that hopefully we can relax a bit more starting Monday. We have also started baking and have a kitchen table full of baking supplies for more projects. We enjoyed two concerts this week, and I worked five days. I thought this snowman I spotted on the sidewalk was so cute:

Something I’m Looking Forward To:

A slower paced schedule this week and next and hopefully time to read by the Christmas tree. I’m working on my 2025 Reading Journal, and I always love the time I set aside to work on this project.

  1. I’m glad that you liked Christmas with the Queen. At this point, I’ll probably save it for next December — but it’s at the top of the list!

I’ll be interested in what you think of By Any Other Name. I DNF’d it, but it was at a time when I was struggling to find a good fit, so I may not have given it a good chance. So, I might try again. I think I found the modern story line difficult to follow and I wasn’t willing to work at it.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas, with plenty of quiet time!

Curious, how are you working on your 2025 reading journal?

    1. I am setting up the monthly pages where I write down what I read and also the second half of the journal is where I keep track of any challenges. It’s really just a chance to play with markers and stickers!

About Me

Welcome! I started my career as a children’s librarian, later becoming a public library director and now I’m a stay at home mom. While my career might have changed, my love of reading has been a constant since I was in 4th grade, and I read over 200 books a year. I love talking about books and connecting readers of all ages with just the right book. Thanks for reading!
