BOOK REVIEW: Thick As Thieves (Kenni Lowry Mystery Series, Book 11) by Tonya Kappes

I’m happy to share a review of Thick As Thieves, book 11 in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. “Perfect for fans of southern cozies with sharp humor, clever twists, and just the right amount of romance, Thick as Thieves will keep you guessing (and laughing) until the last page.”

253 pages, Kindle Edition, Publication February 23, 2025

This line from the plot summary sums up perfectly Thick As Thieves, book 11 in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series by Tonya Kappes: “a blend of southern charm, small-town drama, and a jaw-dropping mystery.” I certainly didn’t need to know anymore when I read that line, and oh my gosh, it is spot on!

Sheriff Kenni Lowry is back and should be planning her wedding to fiance and fellow Deputy, Finn, but in the midst of a wedding dress fitting, she’s called to the chamber of Judge Horace Blackwell who has been found murdered. With the help of Finn, her ghostly Poppa and the town of Cottonwood, Kentucky Sheriff Kenni must catch the killer before anyone else is hurt…or worse!

This is such a fast paced mystery that I read in a day and a half (and could have happily read in a day if adulting hadn’t gotten in the way). I found myself laughing out loud several times and then suddenly holding my breath in anticipation of what Kenni might uncover next. (Secrets, so many secrets!) I didn’t guess the killer until the reveal and let me tell you, it’s a humdinger! And the very end of the book has me chomping at the bit for book 12.

In addition to such a strong mystery, the characters make this book. There’s her dad (Poppa) in ghost form, offering advice and serving as a comforting companion, the handsome and supportive Finn, and of course, Kenni’s mom (Momma) who is absolutely hilarious and frustrating and loving in her own way. Being the dog lover that I am, Kenni’s trusty hound, Duke, is my personal favorite. I wanted so much to reach through the pages and scratch his ears.

The descriptions of Cottonwood, Kentucky bring to life the small town and all its charm and sense of community. That’s one of my favorite things about Tonya’s writing – her descriptions and attention to details pull me in and make me feel like I’m actually sitting next to Kenni in her jeep, driving through town, solving a mystery.

Readers new to the series can easily jump in here and be happy knowing they have a delightful backlist of titles available. Whatever you do, don’t snooze on this wonderfully cozy and mysterious escape! My only complaint is that I have to wait for the next book….
